DISNEY’S THE LION KING 30TH ANNIVERSARY
A brand-led digital and production experience celebrating 30 years of Disney’s The Lion King, bringing together Lebo M, South African talent, live performance and audience storytelling around one of the world’s most iconic entertainment properties.
Year :
2024
Industry :
Entertainment & Media
Client :
The Walt Disney Company Africa
Project Duration :
6 weeks

Problem :
Celebrating 30 years of Disney’s The Lion King in South Africa meant working with a globally recognised entertainment property whose connection to the country runs deeper than the anniversary itself. With Lebo M at the centre of that legacy, the tribute needed to honour the cultural roots of the original film while remaining unmistakably part of Disney’s global brand universe.
The challenge for digital was to extend that experience beyond the stage, translating the talent, music, heritage and production into audience-facing storytelling that could support the anniversary while protecting the identity and standards of one of the world’s most recognisable entertainment brands.

Solution :
Digital was integrated into the wider production environment, allowing content planning and capture to happen close to the performances, talent and creative activity shaping the tribute.
The social approach used the anniversary as an overarching narrative while creating space for Lebo M’s unique relationship with The Lion King, South African talent and the live performance experience to drive storytelling. Planned content supported the wider brand moment, while production access created opportunities to capture material that extended the experience beyond the auditorium.
Working within Disney’s established brand framework required balancing creative opportunity with brand stewardship, ensuring that social content could feel immediate and culturally relevant without compromising the consistency of the property.

Challenge :
The production brought together global IP, major South African talent, live orchestral performance, broadcast, digital content, commercial partners and multiple stakeholder requirements within a tightly controlled brand environment.
Working with an established property like The Lion King required a different kind of creative discipline. Content needed to feel culturally authentic and locally relevant while remaining consistent with Disney’s brand positioning, visual standards and wider anniversary narrative. Talent schedules, rehearsals, production requirements, content capture, approvals and publishing all had to operate around the demands of the live production.
With Lebo M, Lira, Shekhinah, Vusi Nova and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra among the talent involved, the digital operation also needed to capture the scale of the production without losing the individual stories and performances that gave the celebration its South African identity.
Summary :
Disney’s The Lion King 30th Anniversary Tribute Special brought a globally iconic property back to one of the places central to its creative identity, with Lebo M and a line-up of South African talent celebrating three decades of its music and cultural legacy.
For digital, the project was an exercise in brand stewardship as much as content creation: understanding how to work creatively within a major international brand system, coordinate with a wider live-production environment and translate a carefully managed global property into locally resonant storytelling.
The result connected Disney’s global anniversary celebration with the people, performances and cultural influences that gave the South African tribute its distinctive character, extending the experience from live production into broadcast and digital.
