QUENCH: BUILDING A DIGITAL MEDIA PLATFORM

An independently built digital media platform spanning editorial, design, social, video, photography and web, giving me a space to experiment, create and develop hands-on digital production skills from the ground up.

Problem :

Quench began at a time when digital publishing and social media were rapidly reshaping how audiences discovered entertainment, culture and lifestyle content. Building an independent platform meant creating both the publication and the infrastructure required to support it, without the resources, established systems or specialist teams available to larger media organisations.

The opportunity was to build a distinctive digital destination from the ground up, developing its identity, editorial voice and audience while continuously adapting to new platforms, formats and ways of consuming content.

Solution :

I treated Quench as both a media platform and an ongoing creative laboratory, using it to develop ideas and then carry them all the way through to execution.

Rather than specialising in one part of the production process, I built an end-to-end understanding of how digital work comes together. Editorial thinking informed design. Social behaviour influenced content formats. Photography and video expanded the storytelling toolkit, while designing and maintaining the websites created a practical understanding of how content, structure and user experience intersect.

As the platform developed, that combination of editorial consistency and hands-on production helped Quench establish credibility within the entertainment and cultural media landscape, creating opportunities for industry access, event coverage and relationships beyond the platform itself.

Challenge :

Running an independent media platform meant there was rarely a clean division between strategy, creative and execution. Every part of the experience had to be considered, from what Quench should cover and how it should sound to how the website was structured, how stories were packaged and how the brand showed up visually across platforms.

That required working across disciplines that would ordinarily sit with separate specialists. I wrote and edited copy, developed concepts, designed graphics and social assets, photographed events, shot and edited video, created presentations and campaign ideas, managed social platforms and designed and maintained the websites, including basic front-end development and site architecture.

Doing this alongside my professional career added another layer of discipline. Quench had to continually evolve while platforms, audience behaviours and digital publishing itself were changing around it.

Summary :

Over 11 years, Quench became much more than an independent publishing project. It became the environment in which I developed much of the creative versatility that still informs how I work today.

One of its defining milestones was being flown to Durban to cover the MTV Africa Music Awards, placing an independently built platform inside one of the continent's major music and entertainment events. It was tangible validation that something created from the ground up had earned a place within the wider media ecosystem.

More importantly, Quench taught me how every layer of digital connects. Strategy, copy, design, social, photography, video, web and production were never abstract disciplines. I had to make them work together. That experience is a large part of why, even as my career moved into strategy and leadership, I remained deeply connected to the craft of making the work.
