THE EARTHSHOT PRIZE
A globally connected digital campaign bringing The Earthshot Prize to life through an integrated ecosystem spanning live production, broadcast, digital storytelling and audience engagement.
Year :
2024
Industry :
Sustainability & Environmental Innovation
Client :
The Earthshot Prize · MultiChoice Group
Project Duration :
8 weeks

Problem :
The Earthshot Prize brought one of the world’s most ambitious environmental initiatives to Africa for its 2024 awards in Cape Town, creating a global moment that needed to work simultaneously as a live event, broadcast production and digital experience.
The task was to connect those environments into a coherent audience journey. Digital needed to translate the scale, purpose and energy of the physical event beyond the venue, while supporting a globally recognised initiative with international audiences, partners, talent and stakeholders.

Solution :
We integrated digital into the wider production workflow, creating a content operation that could move alongside the event rather than operate separately from it.
Editorial, social, video and production teams worked across planned and live content streams, identifying opportunities throughout the production and moving assets efficiently from capture through editing, approval and publishing. Planned storytelling established the campaign narrative ahead of the event, while responsive workflows allowed digital coverage to adapt to developments on the ground.
Working closely across production, broadcast and digital reduced the distance between a moment happening and an audience experiencing it, allowing the campaign to extend the physical event into a coordinated digital experience for audiences beyond Cape Town.

Challenge :
The complexity of Earthshot lay in the number of interconnected systems required to deliver one seamless experience. Live production, broadcast, digital, audience management, talent, technical infrastructure and communications were operating simultaneously, with teams and stakeholders working across different disciplines, organisations and locations.
With DLD involved across the broader production ecosystem, digital operated close to the source of the event. Content capture, asset movement, editing, approvals and publishing were dependent on activity happening across production and broadcast, often against immovable live deadlines.
Technical dependencies, connectivity, shifting production schedules, talent movements, stakeholder requirements and last-minute changes all had the potential to affect the content operation. Delivering successfully required constant communication across teams, rapid decision-making and workflows resilient enough to absorb disruption without compromising the audience experience.
Summary :
The Earthshot Prize 2024 demonstrated what becomes possible when production, broadcast, digital and audience experience are treated as parts of one connected system.
The project brought together international stakeholders, multidisciplinary teams and complex live-event infrastructure around a globally significant initiative, with digital operating as an extension of the production rather than simply a promotional channel around it.
The result was an integrated campaign that carried the scale and purpose of Earthshot beyond the venue and broadcast, connecting audiences across platforms to a global event staged on African soil.
